I always thought it was Colt, but I'm understanding it's FN? Also, what model is currently being issued?

There are a number of contractors. But the Colt M16 is still the most popular infantry rifle.

I was issued a FN-A4 20" back in 2005 so they've been out there for a long time. Next unit I got a Colt A2.

What's issued will always vary unit to unit. These days most will be M4's with KAC rails, but some still have traditional 20" setups.

From my experience M16’s were all FN, M4’s were Colts. We had HK M27’s as well.

FN in SC just won a contract to make M-4’s for Uncle Sam.
