With deer season not too far away, let's stir the pot with some caliber debates. :) I LOVE several rounds when it comes to deer hunting. HUGE fan of the 7mm Rem Mag, as well as 270WSM. Also the .280 Remington has served me very well over the years. I will say that I probably have a 7mm Rem Mag in the woods the most out of that bunch.

I recently came to a cross roads. I sold the old relaible Remington 700 in .30'06.
I have three "hunting" rifles,
-A Marlin 1894p in .44 Mag for less than 75 yards,.....think hogs in Georgia brush
-A Custom build AR15 in 6.8 SPC, for deer, hogs and such out to 300m
-A FN SPR A1a in .308 Win, it will be good out to around 600m

So, in my opinion, is there a best? Yes,....but what's the target?

The "Thunderbolt of Thor"........the .257 Weatherby Magnum. It is a deer slayer. Since I have started hunting with the .257 WM, I have not even looked at any of my other rifles.

If hunting in an area where shots are expected to be 250m or less,
I'd take the 6.8 SPC,.......anything over, .308 Win

I have a Wilson Recon in 6.8 SPC that I am going to try out this year. I want to see how it does on deer.

The old .270 with 130gr winchester silvertips has worked well for me in a winchester model 70. A Savage 99 in .308 gets some use too. Last year I hunted with a CZ 550 in 6.5x55.

I always take my .243 that my dad gave me when I was younger, hasn't failed me yet. I've only one that didn't drop right there on the spot, and he only went about 20 yards and dropped.

I LOVE my Model 700 in .243 using Federal Premium 85gr Sierra BTHP's. I've dropped every deer and hog that I've ever aimed it at.
