I was/am in the hunt for a fully machined arched mainspring housing with checkering.

Many of the companies make flat MSHs.

    Smith and Alexander is cast.

I bought a Nighthawk arched/checkered MSH with the description:

After my gunsmith receiving the part and telling me it is certainly cast, I contacted Nighthawk.

They said that the description was incorrect and is not machined.

So, who, if anyone, produces a machined arched MSH?

    Thanks in Advance.

Thanks. I thought I looked there. They have an arched and checkered MSH?

I'm pretty sure the mainspring housings have been cast since 1911/12. Casting is appropriate for certain parts and quality varies.

John Masen parts = junk. Ed Brown mainspring housings are very nice and I'm sure they are cast.

I imagine you’re right. I’m really not arguing that point, earnestly. It was a requested for my build.

I bet this is equivalent to the MIM debate...

Rock River Arms makes arched barstock mainspring housings in 20, 25 or 30 LPI.

Ask Alan Smith, or his wife who answers the phone at Smith and Alexander. Their MSH/magwells ("mag guides") are now machined. I have bought two in the past year or two, and also have earlier cast ones. I think he will tell you if he is still shipping old cast inventory of a particular part, or if it is all new machined billet.

They are milled from bar stock. I am sure you can request most any common checkering.

Read the description in the link folks.

I know the S&A magwells and flat MS housings are now machined, am uncertain about the arched ones, I'd say it would be worth the call.

Steve, you probably already know this. The Smith's still sell direct. Their website, unless updated in the past few months, is 15 years old, but if you call, they answer, and will take your order over the phone, and if you have a "technical" question, Mrs Smith puts Alan Smith on the phone, and be sure you have blocked out some time because you can have some great discussions with him if it is close enough to quitting time, Central time.

I just checked the Ed Brown site and it says they are all machined. Not cast as I guessed earlier.

Ed Brown does deliver a very nice looking housing. I have installed a few of the arched, serrated ones and they are very nice.

They are well made and nicely done especially in the recent year. Their HardCore magwell, has been a very nice custom tight fit on everything I have installed it on thus far.
