Wood grips and surface rust?

362 Views 9 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  ZoidMeister
I have my very first ACW Prime Elite inbound soon, and I also already have a new pair of Wood Caliber Turkish walnut grips ready to go.

I've heard Rob mention the potential concern over surface rust beneath wood grips, due mainly from wood (in general) absorbing and holding moisture. That said, I'm curious to know if I can do anything proactive about it. Is there a potential treatment I can apply to my grips to help mitigate any moisture? I thought about furniture wax possibly, but wanted to ask here first.

Thanks in advance for any insights or recommendations.

Renaissance Wax or just a bit of oil
Remove grips now and then, reapply and reinstall

My memory is failing. Who makes those thin plastic grip sheilds?

Everything Bender said.

Ren wax on the grip and frame works great for me, a couple times a year. after a range session so I alway remove grips and wipe clean, you’ll be surprised how much gets under there.

Be careful too about where you store it in terms of moisture. Avoid leaving it in a padded gun rug. I keep mine in an indoor safe with very little temp change. I also use those silicone gun socks for storage inside the safe

Perfect! Thanks guys!
I also use Eezox. You can spray it on the whole pistol. I have toxic sweat so I can’t do blue guns. Especially for carry in the summer.

AlumaGrips

I learned the hard way, that AlumaGrips will chatter on a blue gun and effectively remove the bluing. Always use these liners when using AlumaGrips

Yes!

I started using them on stainless Ruger SR1911's as well. That Ruger "stainless" was notorious for rusting from the moisture and natural oils in some wood grips.

Putting the AlumaGrips liners pretty much stopped the problems.
