As I've said before on the forum I am limiting myself to purchasing two pistols in 2018: my 9mm range/training toy (getting a Sig Legion SAO), and I've been thinking the STI Costa VIP. The Legion should be here this week and I am going to be listing something out of my collection soon, along with tax season coming up I should be in the market soon.

So now I am looking for some input on what I should get. I've been leaning towards the STI Costa VIP in 45 due to it being easier to carry than a government 1911 but with two extra rounds. I also prefer the grip on double stack guns over thinner single stack grips. But given some time my mind has started to wonder and I've seen a Guncrafter No Name that is well within my budget (used).

So now I have two options in the same price range that I have to decide between. I'm still leaning towards the STI because I already have a few Government sized 1911s and I'm thinking I'd really like the larger STI grips, lighter weight, and smaller dimensions for carry. But I really like the look of the No Name and from everything I've gathered on these forums the build quality is on par with Wilson Supergrades.

So please chime in with your opinions.

Depends on your purpose for the gun I think. You said STI because it’s easier to carry, are you looking for a replacement carry gun? Would you carry the guncrafter or would it sit in the safe? If you are really sticking to 2 Guns then get the one that will be used.

My vote is for the STI Costa though.

Either one would probably get carried. I carry my Les Baer currently but if I got the GI and really like it it's possible that would become my EDC.

That makes it a lot tougher call for me, I have only handled & shot one STI 2011 as they are prohibited here in Kalifoniastan, it was a sweet gun - disclosure it was not stock, it had been worked over by Jardine but Ive heard nothing but good about STI. On the other hand the Guncrafter gets rave reviews on here, do not believe that they are legal here, I have certainly not seen one ever in the flesh or the CA forums. I am more of a traditional guy so Id probably lean to the Guncrafter if it was me.

Also in case I do decide to go with STI does anyone have a source on where to get one for a decent price?

Have had both and still have the STI. Kinda comparing apples to carburetors.
Currently own 4 STI 2011s and the PHAT WMG Joe made for me. Simply put, I like the 2011 platform. I have a STI Costa VIP in 9mm and I just love the way it shoots. Have a STI in 45 as well (Tactical 4.0) and again, like the way it shoots.
But, you may not like the way it shoots. You've obviously been behind the wheel of a 1911, so you know how those shoot. If you've never shot a 2011 45ACP, do that first.
One thing to consider (since pricing is part of your decision making) 2011 mags are not cheap at all. You can pick up a couple WC 47 series mags for the price of one STI mag, and almost 3 WC's mags for the price of one MBX Xtreme. Just keep that in mind as well.
But, for me, I'd go with STI. Because I already went down that path and kept the STI.
For buying, every STI I own except one was purchased through one of the member vendors on here. BBP for 2 and Capt1911 (Cajun Concealed) for 1; and purchased one off a member. They are all good to go and gave me a great price.

I say the STI. Simply because you prefer the grip, and you seem to have a little more lust in that direction . You already have some very nice 1911s from other posts I've read: Wilson, Dw, Baer... I doubt the GC would be a big improvement over any of those .

How would you describe the shooting characteristics of your STI Tactical 4.0 when compared to a 1911? I'm aware of the cost (sadly) of the STI mags but I probably will only get 2 extra for a total of 4.

You're probably right , BTW I no longer have the Wilson. I determined it too be too little of an increase in quality for the price when compared to my other 1911s. Not that it wasn't an improvement.

It would be extremely hard for me to look further than the Guncrafter No Name. I like them more and more every time I see one.

Continued membership is in jeopardy if you are limiting yourself to two guns this year.
Well I'm definitely in jeopardy cause I was hoping for one this year but it's a real humdinger or two, okay maybe three but that's it. I think, well... never say never.
Okay I've lost on jeopardy.

Although I haven’t shot, held, or owned a GI, they are pretty flipping sweet.

I chose the STI in your case because of the fact that your Les Baer can do everything that GI will. Your Baer has proven itself and that’s why it’s your EDC. Like the Wilson, the GI will be a slight improvement but not enough to justify switching.

The STI is just different enough to get my attention. An increase in mag capacity, a different platform. The STI’s I’ve held (VIP) and owned (Nitro 10) all lacked something, IMHO. The thumb safety is horrible quality, just feels cheap - could have been fit better with a more postitive “click.” But in 10mm it was reliable and shot very well.

Someone here has an STI that they sent to Lou for new sights and some other minor touches. That would be the route I would take. Good luck!
