Springfield EMP 4 is a great suggestion. Slim, feels great, good looking. The Ronins are outstanding (I have one), but If you buy the pre-ronin versions, which were even higher quality, you can get a killer value! Look for the contour carry model.

I am looking to obtain a 9mm 1911 Commander as my EDC (and my first 1911 that isn't a Government .45. For roughly the same ~$1,500 price, I think I should be able to either (a) buy a gently-used Dan Wesson Guardian or (b) buy a brand-new Colt Commander and have a company like Master Gunworks perform comprehensive work on it (their Level 3 package looks great!).

Owning another Colt and having it worked on by a competent 'smith is very appealing to me, while at the same time I read nothing but rave reviews about Dan Wessons right out of the box.

Any opinions on either option?
Was looking for a Valkyrie years ago, ended up buying a Guardian. Light, very handy, accurate and reliable with anything I feed it. Love mine. It's duel caliber now.

Kimber CDP Pro w/ Ed Brown Bobtail. Sweetness to shoot. Easy to carry.

This might be below your standards, but Modern Warriors has the SA Emissary 9mm Commander on sale with 35% off right now. I picked one up and have no complaints. Mine came out to $871 after tax & shipping. I dumbed the FLGR for the 10-8 Performance spring guide and plug to help lighten mine.

Appreciate the tip! Any holster issues with the square trigger guard?
Not that I've noticed, but I've only tried it in one leather holster. Kydex might be an issue if it's formed to a round trigger.

I also ordered a 5" Ronin that was also on discount (now sold out). I found the Emissary to be of a higher quality. But I don't know if the Emissary is really built to a higher standard or not? You would think so at the price point, but that could just be for the features (tri-top slide, frag front strap, sq. trigger guard, front N/S, flush cut bull barrel).

I dumped the thin grips for standard.

At about $1500 a likely used Dan Wesson would be your best choice, but I don't see to many used Dan Wessons Commanders for sale. The Colts lack a ramped barrel leaving your choices to a Ruger or Springfield Ronin. Either is as likely as good, but the Ruger offers a stainless slide which depending on where you live and how often you wipe it down could be an important feature. You should have enough money left over for some custom work by a good pistol
smith.

Springfield Garrison is a great base gun if you want to build one out your way. (And you don’t mind an all steel gun)

I don't think you're going to find a big price difference between a "gently used" Guardian and a new one. For the extra couple of hundred I'd go with the new one. While DW makes a great gun, (I've owned 3), there are those rare few that need to be sent back. If you ever needed to send it in the shipping and work done, if non-warranty, would be greater than the price difference between a new and used one.
I love my DWs, they are a good choice. Arguably the best bang for the buck among semi-custom guns.

I've carried and shot this Springfield Range Officer Elite Champ for over 5 years now. Short of the optic and grips, everything is stock.
It runs.
It's accurate.
I trust it. My EDC 'working' gun, ghetto grip tape and all.

My 2nd is a DW Guardian, 9mm.
Stock except for grips and the ambi safety.
Sights are 10-8 rear, Kensight front.
Reliable to the extreme, very accurate.

I prefer thin grips on my guns, it allows for a great grip[for me] but the choices are limited.

If for carry , Bill Wison and other top 1911 experts prefer the 1911 Commander Lightweight in 9mm with a steel barrel and aluminum (or even poly) frame to cut weight and still have a low recoil is best. Experts also state that a Commander length 1911 made from a steel barrel / aluminum frame balance better in the hand than all steel Commander 1911's. Metallurgy , manufacturing advancements , etc. mean you don't have to worry much about how long the lightweight Commander will last versus an all-steel Commander . If you are going to carry - then 100% you want a lightweight Commander from the company you like best .
