Anyone have a 'Tier list' of 1911 parts.

Hey everyone!

Iv read about afew brands to use when building/customizing a 1911...but I was wondering if anyone has compiled a list of parts and listed in 'Tiers' of quality for others to go by for future addicts! Maybe a sticky for the future. I don't want to bash other brands for QC but would like a one way source for others to come find the info needed to help them out...like myself :)

Can we build a list and section it in 'Tiers' with links to them?

Maybe we can specify a certain company specializing in this or that..

I'm sure I'm missing stuff but to be honest I don't know what else to add since I'm still new to the 1911 scene myself!

Please guys! Anyone help would be awesome! Just a fellow addict wanting to learn and streamline stuff if it hasn't already!

Thanks!

EGW is the tops of my list for most parts. Wilson Bullet proof for extractor and depending on style grip safeties, Hammers and Sears, Ultra Light Triggers. 10-8 Performance for some trigger applications.

Beyond that I won't use anything else so that's where my list ends.

EGW is the top tier for me! Greider triggers as well. Kart or Jarvis barrels.

I just did a Joe Chambers Medium flat trigger in a specialist a few weeks ago -- I don't know how the part or the service could get any better...

The bottom line is it probably doesn't matter much when you stick to the big names -- There may be some differences but they will most likely be personal preference "feel" differences and not actual quality of the part differences

I used to use Ed Brown beaver tails but have moved to using EGW now

No Cylinder & Slide or Ed Brown? I use their parts often in builds.
I have used both in my LW Commander upgrade,
The other member who said C&S is just OK, I disagree.

I have their 4.0 lb trigger kit, EDM billet parts look great
& work great. I did use a Wolff sear spring instead of C&S.

EGW 25 lpi checkered main spring housing
& mag release lock
Harrison firing pin stop & pin.

Wilson BP slide stop, BP thumb safety, pin kit
BP mag release, BP guide rod, BP extractor

Ed Brown GR plug
Smith & Alexander high grip beavertail GS.
Wolff complete spring kit, 18 lb recoil
Ed Brown 19 lb main spring.

All of the parts are high quality with a price
to go with it, BUT my gun shoots flawlessly

Oh, and for magazines Wilson ETM 8 rounders.

I'm building my 6th 1911 now, and one thing I have tried to do is try different parts from different manufacturers. EGW and Wilson have become my go-to vendors. I've used barrels from Ed Brown, Wilson, Fusion, and Storm Lake. I really like the Storm lake barrels, though all of them when fitted work great.

Not on the later Colts, back in the day they used a few
more MIM parts like the extractor. They learned fast
not to used MIM on stress parts. My 2014 sear is steel.

But I still replaced all fire control parts with a Cylinder & Slide
kit and all other parts with bar stock or billet.

I have a list of what materials are used in late model Colts
I'll post it shortly.

Well, I stand corrected on the sear, it sure looks steel and
this list is from a thread in 2007 so............
Maybe it was replaced by the 1st owner or Colt went steel
I did call Colt and they did say 3 parts :mag catch, lock & disco.

Here's the list:

Made From Machined Barstock:

Barrel Bushing, Slide Stop, Extractor, Ejector, Firing Pin, Hammer, Recoil Plug, Barrel Link, Plunger Tube, Grip Screw Bushings, Sights, Series 80 Plunger, All Pins

Investment Cast:

Thumb Safety, Grip Safety, Mainspring Housing (Series 70 Models)

Stamped Steel:

Firing Pin Stop, Leaf Springs, Series 80 Actuation Levers, Trigger Bow (alloy or steel finger pad)

MIM (Metal Injection Molded):

Magazine Catch, Mag Catch Lock, Sear, Disconnector

Molded Nylon:

Mainspring Housing (Series 80 1991 Models)

Anodized Aluminum:

Trigger pad (Series 80 1991 and XSE Models)

Interesting, I didn't know that & I replace everything except the barrel , slide & frame. The plastic msh always pisses me off, Colt isn't the only company to do it

I personally hate the plastic mainspring housings; & I replace them with EGW flat MSH Assemblies checkered 40 LPI. Just personal preference. My hands like that better; & the EGW parts that I have used are quite good.
