I like the Government for shooting & the Commander for carry.
Big weight difference, but my Government models shoot better.
The slide mass difference and sight radius make the GOVT Model a much better shooter. When it comes to "double taps" and overall functionality the GOVT Model wins hands down.

I have one Commander Model in my line-up of 1911's and I really like it; I got rid of every other sub GOVT I own.

WTBS I won't obtain anything less then a GOVT MODEL moving forward. A properly constructed and tuned GOVT Model is the pinnacle of pistol performance for me. Nothing shoots better in my hands.

I change between Commander and Govt size but always seem to go back to Govt size.

I can shoot the Govt just a little better.

But if your smart you will just get both and then argue with youself which one to carry.

A couple in my shooty collection that I have seen as rentals are the Rugers. Here one has the same grip, grip safety, etc. and the the difference is the 3/4 inch barrel slide diff. One could shoot one and then the other and decide which one you like best.

hmmmmmmm..... many of us here have the same combo.:rolleyes::rolleyes:

I’ve owned Governments, Commanders, and a lovely Dan Wesson CCO. I like them all but currently own only 5-inchers - they are just the “best-feeling” to me and carry / conceal just fine for me.

I could see potentially scoring a Commander again...maybe. And as much as I really liked the CCO, I doubt I’ll get another solely for not wanting to maintain a separate stash of Officer / Compact-sized mags again.

Then again...those CCOs are nice...and so are those Commanders...hmm...LOL... :)

Which one is better? Yes, my answer is yes.

I own both. I like the bit of weight savings from the commander, which is what I usually carry. That being said, I need to order a holster for the GI American I bought from @awmp .

Bet you can't tell what Commander I prefer...
Carried a full size in the army, but I love the shorter, lighter balance, a keeper for sure!

So, what's a better size, Commander or Government? What's the hives opinion on this?
Thanks!

This depends on what you want your Pistol to do. A Cmdr is my preferred carry gun, as it is 3/4" shorter than a Govt Model, it is somewhat easier to conceal. To me, a Govt Model is a little easier to shoot accurately. That 3/4" longer sight radius seems to make it a Little easier to hit a bull.

I have a Bobbed Commander and few Government sized 1911s. Love them both. But as stated it depends on the purpose. When it is colder out, I carry the Government (easy to conceal under the additional clothing), when it is warmer the Commander rides along with me.

The correct answer, of course, is a CCO. :) Well, for me, at least.

A govt is best for plinking on a square range, but a cmdr is a bit quicker out of the holster and seems to point more naturally for me. A CCO just fits my hand better than either of them so that's what I'm slowly drifting toward.

Government slide with a commander grip works best for me [emoji41]
Uhhhhh. What? The government, and Commander are the same grip size anyway.
What these gents said.

I used to favor the Commander size, but then started feeling more love for the G'ovt...then I tried out a CCO...I wouldn't want to have to pick between any of 'em!

Yes, the site commanders need to fix this problem so years old topics no longer appear at the bottom of the page.

Depends on the purpose and what you prefer me I prefer either a Government or a CCO for some reason I have had a half dozen commanders and they just dont do much for me..
Couldn't agree anymore, I've owned a couple commanders and they just don't feel the best in my hand. Love a CCO and a 5" though.

I’ve had a Colt commander 45 for years,, carried a Colt commander for so long I forgot how long. Now I have a nice government model Colt series 70 Competition series 45. It carry’s just fine IWB..I prefer open carry with that one,, like a pancake holster or a M7 shoulder holster. You’ll fair just fine with either one,, in my mind,, it’s a Colt, at my side, it will serve me well for the rest of my born days.. really,, I just wouldn’t trust anything else. God bless America, and all ya’ll. 🇺🇸🤠
