DWX Compact... the journey, so far

So, I had been lusting over the DWX, especially the compact variant since it was initially announced several years ago.
Fast forward to earlier this year the Compact is finally brought to market...

I was hoping to get my hands on one before putting down the coin, but after waiting several months and nothing popping up locally... I decided to just order one through a local shop.
Earlier this week, my order finally came in.

I have to say, upon initial inspection, I was a little lets say, underwhelmed.
Don't get me wrong she is a sweet piece, I guess I had just over hyped my expectations.
I didn't really like how the grip felt, and wasn't sure about the trigger. That said I still took possession, and brought her home.

After a night of dry fire and fondling, and before even putting a round down the pipe... I decided to put her up for sale.
Mainly because I spent more on her than I wanted to (local buy, tax and stuff), and I had just bought another pistol I spent too much on.

Lot's of members suggested I shoot her... and I did want to, but figured I might get closer to my investment if she was unfired.
Then I found out that I really overpaid, and since placing my order they are now seemingly in stock everywhere, and had come down significantly in price over just a few weeks.
Fudge me!

So, I decided I was going to take her out and put a few rounds down the pipe, so at least I could stomach the loss a little easier.

I must admit, I am glad I did. My concerns over how the grip felt and the trigger were dissolved after just the first magazine.
She is a fantastic shooter. I was only planning on a quick 100rds, and ended up putting 250 down the pipe today.
It appears I will be hanging onto this beauty for a while longer!

That said, I do have a few concerns left.
The barrel shows significant wear after only 250rds. Much more than I would expect, and would like to see.
Also, I didn't notice it before, but the mag catch also has some play in the frame when no magazine is inserted. I did not have any issues at the range with magazines dropping or anything.
Just seems a bit odd, and sloppy on the QC.
I may reach out to DW about the mag catch, or maybe not.

Curious if any other DWX owners have noticed these "issues".

Well, that is my brief and yet complicated DWX Compact journey to date...
I normally don't write up threads such as these... but figured why not. And who knows, maybe someone found it entertaining or helpful

Thanks for reading

Primary
I’m going to check my barrel but I don’t recall it looking like yours. I’m at 4k rounds now.
I can’t stop shooting this.
Well maybe. I have a P-09 coming tomorrow.
Primary Machining has my slide right now machining and mounting a red dot. Holster ordered and already bought three mags and replaced the base plates. Have yet to fire it.

Man that's Sick... The Doc will write a Rx for that. Take two thousand rounds then call me if you have any problems. Been there and over analyzed way too much. Just enjoy it. Now what kind of upgrades in say 4-5 years and several thousand rounds? Good info. Thanks.

Quick update... she is going back to the Mothership to address my concerns
Not only the loose mag catch and barrel wear... but the kicker was when I attempted to install a new set of grips, one of the inset frame bushings stripped.
I have never had such issues with any of my CZ's or DW 1911's. Hopefully it will be a quick turnaround, but probably not.

*Update.... received an email from CZ that my "repairs" have been completed.
Per their email... "Work Performed: Barrel wear found to be normal. Replaced grip screw bushings and screws. Magazine catch components found to be within tolerance..."

Not really happy with their declarations of Normal and Within Tolerance. But, oh well, hopefully I will have her back in hand soon.

That sucks about the threads for the grip screw getting stripped. I didn't even know the DWX compact used bushings for the grip screws. Did you use the factory screws for the new grips? Lok grips just recently started offering the DWX torx screws for their grips.

Yes, indeed it does suck. I thought they were tapped into the frame, but upon further inspection the bushings appear to be inset in the frame.
I ordered a set of Lok grips, but they came with the CZ 75 compact screws. so I was reusing the OEM screws.

vildetwink,

Sorry to hear about the issues with your DWX compact. I hope things get resolved quickly and to your satisfaction. Please give us an update when your pistol is returned.

I had no interest in the DWX compact until handling one at my LGS. Shouldn't have done that. It fit my hand perfectly and since I don't want a rail or an optic .....

Anyway, here is some info regarding the compact that came to light over the past couple of weeks.

Per an email from Keith Lawson at DW, the finish on the compact's slide is DLC not Duty Treat. (Per Keith, this info is currently unavailable on Dan Wesson's website due to, well ...... problems.)

Chowser turned me on to a Kydex holster for the compact being made by ANR.

Garrett is now making a leather lined Kydex holster for the compact.

I'm shooting mine again this weekend. Expect about another 500 rounds. Will see how my barrel looks after.
I did drop it recently and scratched one of the baseplates (my fault completely). Nothing else hit on the gun.
I did have some issues lining up the holes on some wood grips and kind of forced the screw in. I should've filed the hole in the grips but I can't find my files. lol

Part 2 "Oops I did it again"
After the issues I had with the first instance, and aggravation with CZ customer service... I vowed to not get one again, ever, or for at least a year, ok, well, maybe a couple months or so...

I did really like the platform. Even with the sour taste of the first instance still lingering. So, when I came across another DWX Compact for a decent price. I decided to buy it.
Going to attempt to give this one more of a chance...
That said, I am little disappointed that the loose mag catch on the previous instance was not an isolated issue. But, other that, the fit and finish on this one is pretty darn good.

Waiting on a set of grips from LOK... and will look into swapping out the flat Red trigger, with a curved medium Black trigger I ordered from CZ... if they ever get around to shipping it.
Updates to follow, maybe, if anyone cares...

Not off to a great start... received the LOK grips and the holes do not line up with the bushings. Modified the grips to attempt a salvage, and the grip screws are too long (even with the o-ring bushing), and bind on the sear spring.
Grips on my last one lined up about perfect, and had no issues with the grip screw length. Not sure if it's a LOK or DW issue, but either way... UGH!
Been almost two weeks and the trigger has yet to ship, probably just going to cancel that order.

Sorry to hear of these issues. So after all these months, what's the final outcome?
were your issues resolved?
I'm also considering the DWX compact, even though it's probably gonna shoot about the same as my WC SF X9. Last week I did happen to call Dan Wesson customer service with a few questions and left there totally unsatisfied.

In the end, I sold the DWX Compact. I really, really liked the platform... just wasn't happy with how the final product was executed.
And I was quite dissatisfied with how DW/CZ handled my concerns.
Maybe they have fixed a few things with the new variants, but at this time I have no plans to pick up another one.

This thread was very informative. Though I am sorry for your misery I’m glad you took the time to inform the rest of us.

I nearly bought a Dwx compact a while ago when I held it in a local store and my hand fell in love. I contacted DW for info on a program on their website…no response. Reached out again regarding the compact and a DW Bruin ….no response. I don’t think your experience was a one off unfortunately

I hear nothing but negativity about DW’s customer service. I really love my DWXc, and want to pick up some of their other 1911 models, but I do hope I never have to use their customer service division.

The one or two times I called customer service some general questions I wasn't impressed at all. Also, reading some of the negative comments here made me take a step back from purchasing one earlier in the month. I do have a WC SF X9 which is fairly similar to the DW so I wasn't in a hurry to buy one, but right now the negative comments kind of tipped the scale.
For the life of me, I don't understand why companies such as this don't have a rep on here fielding these questions.
