IWB and sitting

I've been trying some more IWB carry instead of my pocket J frame rig. Using a 3" speed six (K-frame size) or my Valkyrie cco. Both have TTgunleather mikes special holsters. Good belt, worn just behind the hip.

I'm comfortable and the concealment is good when standing, walking etc. but when I sit in a car, especially one with bolstered seats, I'm being jabbed something awful in the kidneys by the grip. I also don't like sitting in a high top chair or barstool, I feel like the grip is just hanging way out there and it's neither comfortable nor concealed at that point.

Am I doing it wrong or what? I've tried moving it forward on my belt but it's actually worse in the car that way. I've also tried appendix and it works with a S&W shield but I can't see it working while seated with anything bigger. Is crossdraw IWB a thing? I want to be able to carry these bigger guns because I'm much more proficient with them but I'm having trouble finding something that works equally well while driving, sitting, on a motorcycle, etc.

A weapon is comforting; rarely comfortable.

That said, it's all a matter of finding the sweep position with any holster. Driving long periods, I've been known to yank a IWB/OWB holster around to in front of the seat belt itself or at least in front of the anchor point (right handed). I had the option of actually carrying there, but rarely did, preferring the better cover of 3-5 o'clock positions. You will see federal and local LEO carry at about 2 o'clock - comfort, better security, less protruding of your drawing elbow in the draw stroke. I loved it driving - never used it when on my feet. All that said, the gun grip length is a huge impact on seated comfort - along with holster type, holster position, gun grip thickness and your "thickness" around the middle. At 5'7 170 I can put it almost anywhere and be as comfortable one place as another. But long periods of sitting - I'll reposition if possible before sitting even if only a half-hour mark on the belt. 5 o'clock sitting in a hard pew type or bench seat is a PIA regardless.

Take your time, experiment - holsters themselves fall into the Johnny's fav might not be your cup of tea ----- at all Good luck. There's knowledge on the forum - milk it.

I carry IWB at about 4 o'clock.

Comfortable for me sitting in a car, but VERY difficult to present.
High probability of a threat presenting from the drivers window,
causing me to lean to my right, further interfering with the draw.
It is what it is, I do anything I can to avoid road rage incidents and always strive to leave myself an exit strategy.
I'd much rather just drive off!

Not too long ago I attended a 2 hr seminar while seated in one of those cheap, molded plastic chairs. The ones with armrests. They likely weigh about 5 pounds.
I was uncomfortable sitting for that long, not due to my gun.
Anyways as the meeting concluded, I was quick to gain my feet.
LOL!!!!
My pistol had become 'lodged' under the armrest.
As I stood I lifted the entire chair several feet off the ground!
It was clumsy and witnessed by quite a few people.

Lesson learned.

TT is one of the best holster makers out there. If your cant is 10 or 15 degrees try moving the holster to about 2 or 230 and see what you think. I prefer to have my gun on the front between 10 and 230. If I am grabbed from just about any position or direction it is easier to maintain control. On top of the other reasons stated above that are negatives for behind the hip carry.

AIWB at about 1230 is pretty primo with the correct setup. When I carry OWB I always carry at 2 or 230 usually with a straight or close to zero cant holster. This also affords you the ability to reach across with your weak hand and unholster if the situation has gone to sheet and that is needed. Of course, body type, practice, confidence, and skill level all play a part in what works for each individual user.

It is canted but it's a grip forward cant and doesn't work in the front like you're saying. I would really need a grip rearward cant for that to work.

I'm going to put my 2 cents in. I think you need to try a different holster. I went through a lot of them before I found the right one for me. I use a 5Shot IBS for government at 3-3:30 on a Bigfoot belt. The pistol stays in place and the ride height is very comfortable to me sitting or standing.

I still haven't found a OWB holster that I like enough to keep. I've been keeping my eyes open in classifies for one to try.

Reminds me of the time I was at a family reunion and had my heavier chair on uneven ground. The butt of my .45 caught the back strap on the chair, jerking me off-balance. I came crashing back down into the chair and tipped backwards into where my 90-year-old great-aunt was seated. Of course, my uncle caught it on camera and sent it to me.

I just received my TT Gunleather reinforced IWB for by Sig P220 compact , took about a month , extremely happy . Also , real hard to beat Milt Sparks . I've got a couple of those too . One commander size and one for Sig P226 non railed . P226 is SS2 . Extremely versatile as to position , it also fits my old S&W 39 .

The only thing that seems to work real well in a car is a shoulder rig . IWB at 3:30-4:00 is near impossible to get gun in action sitting in a car . I do have a Bianchi IWB where the belt loops are on a swivel swivel . That can easily switch to cross draw . Also has a thumb break . I use it riding motorcycle .

Big guy here with added weight as the years added up
Couple of months ago I went AIWB for full size guns.
Summary
One size larger pants WAIST cut not hip cut
Any reasonably good kydex holster (so I can Re holster)
Holster needs to be high enough that I can get a full grip on the gun.
Made a Foam wedge for the bottom of the holster (Walmart double sided Velcro (sewing Dept)
Bought the "claw" helps with both comfort and concealment
Med to good web belt I bought an Amazon special for 25-30 bucks (I was doing a test run on AIWB, but the belt is fine and don't need to upgrade.
Belt that is too stiff wedges into fat guys so 3 stitch or light weight 5 stitch

I wear the pants at the WAIST, belt is firm not overly tight.
Loose shirt i.e. may need one size bigger also
I can sit , drive, walk etc. Picked up mulch last week and mulched the yard with commander on (steel frame)
Gun is always available in front of me. Always concealed , never available to others w/o me being able to protect it. Mostly it's very comforting in front of me and comfortable there.

I dryfired a lot with it before I shot it live fire. Also the 1911 safeties help my mind set about any negligent discharges in my pants !!! WOW!
It's between my privates and my thigh yea that small 1 inch or so spot just off center.

So there you have it from a fat guy that AIWB works for.

Thanks for the suggestions. Good to see I'm not alone.
If I'm going to carry the shield or similar it's a non issue really and appendix is fine, but anything longer jams between my leg and my body when sitting. I'm pretty 'regular sized' but that's just geometry. I might be able to carry the revolver appendix with something like a side guard quick clip but I'd have to try it.

I was looking at the simply rugged holsters. Has anyone tried to rig up the inside out straps on a pancake like that for a crossdraw position?

OP, I had similar problems with IWB.

I carried an HK P2000SK behind the hip for years and it drove me crazy that the tip of the grip would poke out when seated. Although I attempted to accept the realization that most people either don't notice or don't care, it constantly nagged me. I would avoid barstools, bending down, or sitting with my back towards anyone.

I reached a point where I wanted more gun with more boolits, so now I'm an AIWB convert. Super easy to conceal and I'm not worried about retention. A good quality holster, with a wing and an insert (or Dr. Scholl's shoe insert velcro'd on) can be incredibly comfortable, even if you are seated all day.

Just did 20 bags of mulch around the front yard.
Commander AIWB never had to readjust the gun/holster/pants.
I dumped it and raked it around.
Honestly have to readjust my pants a lot when worn at the hips without a gun on.

Really liking the AIWB worn in waist level pants
