I purchased a Robinson XCR-L today from the company's website, and wanted to document the process from start to finish, to include an eventual range review.

If you haven't taken a look at their website or know nothing about them- link is below for your viewing pleasure. Bottom line you can build your own rifle in 'Light' calibers (5.56, 300BO, 7.62x39, 6.5GREN, 5.45x39, 6.8, 6mmARC, .224 Valkyrie) or 'Medium' (.308, 6.5, .243 WIN, .260 REM), in both numerous pistol and rifle barrel lengths. You can also choose between black, FDE or OD green cerakote finish.

Home - Robinson Armament Co.

After recently having a SIG SPEAR LT and CZ Bren 2 MS, I decided to give Robinson a shot at the piston driven spot in my safe.

I built the below rifle with the following specs; XCR-L Competition in 5.56mm, 14.7" light barrel, OD green finish, with the FAST2 buttstock.

Not sure yet how long it will take to deliver; I did read it could be 4-6 weeks, but one reviewer on YouTube waited nearly six months. If anyone else has one of these I'd be interested in hearing your take on these!

Wow, theres a blast from the past. I didn't realize they were still around. I had been interested back in the days of the Magpul Massada, early SCAR trials, ACR era. Tried the SCAR light....didnt like it. Bushmaster choked on the Massada (ACR). Ended up recently with a SIG SPEAR LT for my piston gun. After a rough start with it, it's growing on me. Looking forward to a report on the Robinson XCR.

The XCR-M in 308 looks interesting.

I had a SIG SPEAR LT for a few months and traded it away; great features (ambi everything, looked great, super solid) but it didn't grow on me. I didn't think it was balanced very well, and I never yearned to shoot it more than my normal DI rifles. I struggled letting it go because it seems to be a really well-made gun- but I knew it would just be a safe queen.

I'm giving the XCR a try simply because I am fickle as all get out, and it just seems really unique and also well-made.

More to follow!

Just picked up the Competition XCR-L in 5.56 with 14.7" barrel. Will follow up with some words and of course a range report (hopefully Wednesday). Just wanted to get some photos out there.

Initial impressions (adjectives): solid; tight; feels well-made; very good fit and finish. Two stage trigger with no grit and short reset. We'll balanced and feels lighter than I thought it would. Slim profile and thin hanguard. Charging handle moves smoothly. Backup irons are synthetic, and are quite stiff to raise/lower.

I intend to mount an LPVO and zero it soon-- more to follow!

For better or worse, here's my janky review of the XCR-L. I'm no video editor, but constructive feedback is appreciated.

Might be worth testing barrel removal/replacement and return to zero in a future video.

Also a discussion about how the single piece upper limits some barrel options:

the competition length cant use a short 300Blk barrel

the short length upper ends up with not much space for a bipod, exposed gas block and piston with longer barrels

Just ordered the mid length in 5.45x39 (same color).
Got a metric ton of 5.45 ammo recently and need a couple of blasters to chew through the stuff.
Looking forward to seeing how this rifle compares to my Fuller 5.45 and the Bulgarian I just won off GB.
