I searched around and couldn't find a direct answer to this, so here we go...

I'm interested in a Colt Combat Commander in 38 Super. The long-term goal is using it as a base for a carry gun project. The series 80 parts are fine, and I don't plan on doing a "delete" there, but I do want to swap out the hammer/sear/disco for something like a Harrison ignition kit.

Is that feasible, or do the series 80 parts significantly change the process?

I would think if I was going to go through the whole ignition system I would get rid of any and all series 80 parts. You are redoing most of the guts, you might best just keep going. Mostly taking out some parts, and a new firing pin.

Since it's going to be a carry gun you're wise leaving the 80 series just for the fact if you do need to use it a scumbag DA won't bring up deleting a safety. Yeah it's a BS but it'll cost you time and money proving he's an idiot.

Check the timing to make sure the plunger and firing pin aren't making contact, you'll see doink marks on both if they are. If so get an N lever from EGW to get the extra lift, I've never had it happen but it can lift a little too much but that can e adjusted out. Going back to a scumbag DA keep the trigger pull at least 4lbs, 4.5 seems to be the consensus as the magic number.

No attack on you Rccolt45, Virginia is a nice place and I just drove through it 2 days ago. Trigger weight is odd not being checked but cool, some have a hissyfit over a 3lb trigger. Not sure of your mention of the safety, they must be disengaged to fire notwithstanding a mechanical failure. Now defeating a safety like pinning a grip safety can be frowned on along with eliminating the 80 series back to the original design, but it's a completely moot point for someone that can handle a firearm. I've followed shootings for decades and if anything can sway a righteous shooting to accidental it's been used. I commend you for being factual and not trying to twist the facts to gain a conviction on your record.

Living in VA, I appreciate it. I'm generally not a fan of bypassing safety features on defensive firearms. I have two series 70 already where it's a non-concern, and my typical carry guns are DA/SA CZs, anyway.

I pretty much expect that should the state want to prosecute, then it's the DA's job to make me look as bad as possible, and anything will get used in pursuit of that. Not just bypassed safety features, but ammo choice selection ("He's such a vigilante that he loaded up his own super deadly ammunition!"), training regime, and anything else. Given my background and side projects (blogging, podcasting, youtube, writing for magazines, competition, training, etc.), that would be a fun discovery, I'm sure.

True. In FL if you are fine the civil case should not be even heard but it doesn't always work that way fir some reason. A few years ago a punk kid got shot and killed being a dumass and it was a righteous self defense case, done deal. Momma of a race I won't say brought a civil case because her boy was a saint and it went to court pissing away good money... why was the case even heard to begin with? Momma got squat but pissed away good time and money to let the judicial system do it's intended job.

I'm sorry but if my kid, brother, whatever goes to prison or gets killed being a dumass it is what it is, don't play poor me trying to get rich off a civil BS lawsuit. Proves you're as ignorant thinking you're owed something but you're just a lazy F playing the game I pay that costs me tax dollars for. Get a job and close those those legs so bambino's stop popping out to teach how to rape the system.

Ammo, that's a good point. Black Talons were a great design but guess what happened there over the entitlement crowd, and targets turned blue. Black Talons are still here but they don't bitch because it doesn't have the black coating now. Appease the ignorant and change one little aspect of the same thing and the dumbasses don't have the IQ level realize it.

I would not be at all be
Concerned about ammo selection in a criminal case. Reason being is for it to make a difference the prosecutor would have to have evidence that would show that for the vicitm would not have died if they used another type of ammo. I can’t imagine a scenario were a medical examiner would be able to testify to that or any expert in ballistics. It would be speculation at best and speculation is not admissible even from an expert witness.
Probably goes for a civil case but can’t say for sure having never done civil law. This is also the same reason that disabling safety’s is not much of an issue for me. It would only matter in a involuntary manslaughter case where because of the removed safety the gun went off accidentally - that would be the basis of what is commonly called criminal negligence which is the basis of a involuntary charge.
However in a civil wrongful death suit yes it would be an issue for sure.

With the improvements in ammo over the last few decades I believe you're right. I remember the dumdum by cutting and X in the bullet tip and boy did that twist some panties along with reloads. So you reload a round that mimics a factory round to save money, moot point. Hollow points were already out but you cut a dumdum from a solid, if it expands like a hollow point you lessen the chance of a shoot through. That sounds more like trying to minimize collateral damage than being an evil lunatic trying to make scrambled eggs out of his innards, jeesh give me a break.

With the 1911 the safety issue really is a non issue for anyone with a brain. The 80 series is the second system that was created because of ambulance chasing attorneys, there are MANY more pre 80's out there. The grip safety is from the 110+ year old design and the thumb safety was added for military adoption immediately, pinning it makes it like millions of other semi automatics.automatic.

I haven't followed shootings for quite a few years now but it wouldn't surprise me some hardcore anti gun jurisdictions would still pull things like this up to cause you more grief and money for your lawyer.
