I came across a Springfield Armory 1911 with a serial number of XSA78xxx. I contacted Springfield and they said they did not manufacture it and that it could be an early government model. I can't find any reference to an XSA serial prefix. Does anyone have any information on when this may have been manufactured?

From my understanding the Springfield Armory of today has very little in common with the Springfield of the time when that pistol was manufactured other then name.

Springfield’s current list of serial numbers only dates back to around 1985. But I may be completely wrong.

If it's a Springfield Armory manufacture then why does it have ...
"Colts PT.F.A. MFG. CO." markings on the slide?
I see a lot of good stuff (1911 not 1911A1, Ordnance stamps on both frame and slide, long trigger, correct thumb safety for 1911 correct slide release for 1911, etc.). Why do you think it was made by SA?
A look at the other side and especially the actual serial number might help those that know more than me.....

That was the patent number from Colt.
