Just handled a very odd Nowlin 1911 at a LGS and am wondering if the addicts can put it in any kind of context. It was a 5” gun chambered in .50 GI, and appeared to be whittled from standard 1911 bits and bobs. Barrel was actually 5.5”, with a conventional bushing and a FLGR. The frame appears to be a “cut and shut” of a standard frame…there are gaps on the sides of the grip safety and (arched) MSH that are quite noticeable, wide enough that the trigger track can be seen on both sides of the grip safety. The one magazine in the gun was a WC, appeared to be widened, and the feed lips reshaped for the bigger cartridge.
Anyone seen or heard of such a pistol being created? I’ve got a Guncrafter Model 1, bought used from this same store, as well as a Guncrafter conversion top end in .45 ACP + .50 GI that’s formatted to work on my Glock 20 frame. The .50 GI cartridge is a quirky and niche thing, and I certainly don’t need a 3rd gun…but the Nowlin is fascinating. All righty, the floor’s open for discussion.

My question would be if there is any way to confirm who did the work. My understanding is that John Nowlin stopped customizing guns in the '90's, but I don't know if that is him as an individual or his entire shop. I know that now they just build parts.

For me, the biggest question is whether a reputable smith built it and maybe that question can;t be answered. If it were built by John Nowlin or one of his sons or employees(I don't know how many people that is, truly) I would have more faith. If someone "bubba'ed" the gun at home with Nowlin parts, that's not as confidence-inspiring.

I love the idea of the .50GI and I love the idea of it in a gun with a bushing. I want to own a .50 one day, but I don't want a Glock conversion. I want a proper 1911.

I have no "expertise" and I am just a shooter and gun guy. What you are describing is cool and I hope you are able to share photos or by chance, more info.

Just because it has a Nowlin marked frame doesn't mean its a Nowlin built gun (Nowlin sold frames...)

Haven’t ever seen a Gregg Derr 1911 in person, but the level of craft on this gun, though decent, is not at what I believe his work looks like.

Rather than me taking bad photos, I’ll point to where to find decent ones. Since I can’t recall if it’s kosher to post direct links here, I’ll say that googling “Nowlin 1911 .50 GI” will pull up a listing on Guns International and the Collectors Firearms (Houston) website.

Ok so I just looked at the ad on guns international and looked good at the pics. And it is my and my opinion all that what this “Nowlin 1911 .50GI” it is the work of a “Gun Plumber”
I say that for several reason one being if you zoom in on the pic of the back of the pistol. I’m pretty sure you could throw a cat thru the gaps. Now with that being said it maybe the pics.
