I have owned and shot 10 mm for 25 years. Used to have a first run Colt Delta Elite. I recently (the last 6 months) discovered .38 Super. It didn't take long to fall in love with the round. I think both have their place in any collection.

The .38 Super has a lot of the attributes of 10mm (flat shooting, accurate), but with less recoil. As I age, arthritis and winter some times make shooting 10mm a bit painful. I can shoot .38 Super all day long. I still carry .45 ACP as well as 10mm, but have been carrying commanders in .38 Super more and more.

As others have stated reloading is probably the way to go, with both rounds. That will be my retirement endeavor, reloading and shooting a lot.

I have two 10mm, a Glock and a WC. Both are awesome, the round is lots of fun and no doubt a power punch.

Hard ball or HP for personal defense?

LOL . . .

Interesting. My order of preference goes:

9mm, 10mm, .38s, .45acp, .40sw
I need to get me a .40SW 1911 . . .

My order of preference would be

10mm, .38SS, .45ACP, 9mm, (.40SW TBD)

That pic always cracks me up! I wonder how they did that if not photoshopped. While I have a 38 Super Colt, being a big bullet or big & fast fan, I have had a couple 10mms and wish I had latter 1 today. The very 1st 10mm I had was the POS Wyoming Arms Parker, and it didn't last long before self disintegrating. That's 1 of the main guns to watch out for & NOT get, another of course is the Laseraim that used the exact same design & metallurgy of parts, but with a laser built in. I'd LOVE it if I could afford to build a longslide 10mm! Between those 2 choices, I'd grab a 10mm in a heartbeat if I didn't already have a 460 Rowland conversion on 1 of my 1911s!

I think all three of the above are a must have IMHO.
But I would prefer to have 1911s with supported ramped barrels in both 10mm and
38 super Calibers if you want to shoot heavy defensive loads.

Actually i like the 9mm to shoot, just not to carry.
My only 9mm is my Vbob which now sports a Bar-Sto 38supper barrel.
My EDC rotation Includes my two DW Guardians in 45 and 38Super, and my G30sf that now sports a SL 10mm conversion barrel. My bug is an LCR in .357.
I ain't got room for a 9mm in my EDC rotation! If I did, I was thinking about something real small like an LC9 Pro or a Shield.

I transfered my G 19 to my daughter, I Have a Glock 23 that is just taking up space in the safe... I may even have to get a G19 top end for it. Still wouldn't carry it.
Or maybe I should explore the .357 sig... Nah. Hate reloading bottleneck handgun cartridges!

What I really want is a 10mm commander!
Wonder what my choices would be?

Here is my 10mm Commander built by Lou. It is currently with Lou getting a bobtail and respray.

I own, reload and shoot both rounds regularly. If you don't reload, the 38 Super gains little over the 9mm and the 10mm gains little over the 40 S&W. Like many calibers, the ammo companies have continually down loaded these two great shooters to where they are almost anemic. Reloading is what makes them become magic. I've always said if I was forced to pick only one handgun it would be my 6" Nighthawk 10mm loaded with 180gr. Hornady XTP's romping along at something just short of sub-nuclear. For me, it will do everything.

Loving this thread. Have 1911's in 45 and 9mm, but looking at next one in 38 super. Isn't the 38 super closer (longer, more powder) to the 9mm (than a 10mm)? Also, curious how you feel it handles vs. the 45.

Thanks, guys.

Yep, Yep to all the below.

My favorite caliber, has power, shoots great and never an issue.

38 Super is the most fun/useful cartridge chambered for the 1911......IMO.
Well said, Greg! The 38 super has plenty of punch, and is extremely quick to get back on target. Absolutely, my favorite caliber, and really enjoyable to reload.

Well, I own both calibers. Both Colt's. Both calibers are hard to just walk in to Wally World and find rounds laying around. They shoot very differently in terms of recoil with factory loads. I just am not in position to set up a reloading bench, but now with these calibers, a 357 and an m1A....gonna have to soon. I certainly get a little more respect at the range when I light off the Delta Elite. I love both guns equally. If I was competing....no question that a 38 Super is the better round(though probably few ever shoot that caliber now)....if I wanted to stop someone that perhaps was behind an object....or a bad critter like a mountain lion or wild pig, gimme a 10mm every time. Better yet, my Model 66 Smith. Hurt Locker time for the bad guy.

Hi guys, I'm a Springfield fan. Your thoughts on having SACS make me a 6" 10mm out of the Single Stack Classic basic platform. I will be adding many changes internally and some exterior goodies as well. Primary use is hunting deer and anything that requires the 10mm power factor.

I have done a lot with the 10mm in the 1911, have come to like Underwood for there 10mm bonded 180 grain, expands with good penetration, yes there is recoil but its a 10mm full load 1350fps for a 5 inch 1911.
Have not done a 38 super but looks like it has its place. Would like it in a nice 5 inch 1911.
I have used the 357 sig 125 bonded from same co. at 1475FPS, don't load it, uses low flash powder. My .02 worth.
