I ran across two nearly new Kimber SIS 1911's today. One is a full size with a rail and the other is a Commander w/o a rail. The full size supposedly had less than 10 rounds thru it & the Commander less than 5. They're absolutely mint and have all of the accessories including extended base plates, unopened tubes of oil, etc.

The guy who's selling them said in about 2008 the LAPD SIS (Special Investigative Services) Unit had Kimber built them unique pistols and after reading a number of articles online this appears to be true. What I'm curious about is what he's claiming - that Kimber sold a few SIS guns to the public and the LAPD threatened to cancel their contract so the SIS was removed from retail sale. If true, would there be enough rarity to these guns that they'd have collector value? I apologize for the crappy cell phone photos because they don't do justice to the quality of what I saw.

They're $1200 each and if I bought one or both they'd be investments & safe queens. I have so many guns now I'm concentrating on purchases that will (hopefully) appreciate significantly over the next 5 - 10 years.

I'm relatively new to the 1911 arena but have purchased six since Dec. 1st '15. Nothing against Glocks but the reason I bought my first 1911 in Dec. was because I couldn't get a decent trigger on my EDC Glock 26. Now I rotate between a 9mm SA Range Officer Compact, a 9mm Colt Defender that's been tightened up and custom Cerakoted and a .45 S&W1911 Pro. I just bought a ANIB .45 Para Expert Carry today for $500 and think it was a pretty good price.

I'd like to know how many SIS guns made it to the retail market so if you have any knowledge about this subject I'd appreciate you sharing it.

Just stocked up on .223 / 5.56. I like building AR's but buying the parts vs. buying a completed gun are almost the same cost. I have two AR pistols (one will be a SBR when the stamp shows up) and a couple of rifles.

Maybe I'll buy more silver instead. Up 44% over the last 6 months.

So much for rarity - LOL!

I appreciate the combined knowledge I find in most forums. I made up a saying years ago when I had a couple of dozen Techs reporting to me, "No one of us is as knowledgeable as all of us." Either I made it up or plagiarized but that was a long time ago however the same holds true for groups like this.

Bought one new , paid too much , sold it , don't miss it . Not Kimber bashing , still have a few Kimbers and I like them . The SIS has a slick coating on it that I just couldn't fall in love with . It was reliable and accurate I just saw something else I wanted more . Don't see any Kimber attaining collector status . Buy 'em , shoot 'em . I still see used SIS's on LGS shelves occasionally , they must have made a bunch of them .

I'll go against the stream on the collectible aspect. The SIS is the Kimber model with the most controversy and often people buy the sizzle instead of the steak. I have no idea how many were produced between 2008 and 2010 but I think it's safe to speculate that most were for civilian use. I know that mine is not a series "II" gun nor have any of the dozen or so that I've ran across over the years been Swartz safety models. I've read that under CA law, the department issued SIS's would have to have been of the "II" variety. The SIS has a pretty interesting history and apparently quite a bit of gun fights for such a small unit. A number of articles have suggested that officers buying pistols from Kimber on discount and selling them to civilians led the LAPD PR folks to discontinue their relationship with Kimber. Whatever the case, my full size SIS is a pretty cool gun and if there is ever a Kimber that just may be sought after someday then the SIS series is a good bet. I just need Hollywood to produce one really good SIS flick starring these Kimbers!

I have to go with this guy on what he said. I never owned one of these but came close. I do own other Kimbers. LAPD SWAT used the TLE RL II right? May still, I'm not sure.

My point is sometimes it is hard to predict what will become collectable and what will not. Certain guns, usually low production numbered, guns of a certain flavor are instant classics. Others hide in the shadows until years later. There are too many to list here.

To the point of this thread. No, I wouldn't tie up over 2K in these two guns. I would low ball the seller and offer him, oh I don't know, $1600 and see if he bites.

My Ultra SIS was a great shooter, carried well, just didn't do a lot for me.

OP, if you are a Kimber fan, and can get one in the $800-900 range, I would say get it!
I agree with Bender. I think it's a coin toss. Usually a production run gun isn't going to appreciate in value. However being an SIS series, they may go up in price. Like I said, it's a coin toss.

that being said, from what the guys on here have said, they were good shooters. I'd buy the one that fits your needs best and shoot the hell out it.

After reading all yalls' comments it's a closed matter for me - no SIS in my future. I know positively the seller would never go below $1000 each and I'm not intending to shoot them so I'm not interested in them anymore.

Regarding TheDoaner's comment about LAPD officers selling them to civilians: I read a review of the SIS from 2008 & the author said the 21 SIS officers bought an average of 6 each. That would certainly give credence to the theory that the cops bought them on discount & flipped them.

J Foxworthy definitions:
You'uns = 4 or less
Yall = 5 or more
All yall = a larger group

Really? Some think a <$3000 gun is an upgrade from a >$1000 gun, imagine that, lol.

Just imagine if you will we know the price of Kimber, if you were looking for another production with identical features, what would that same upgrades in let's say a DW, what do you figure that price would be. Just used the same tactic when I decided I wanted a 10mm with a rail and went with the TLE/RL. The money saved by going with the Kimber over the next closest price DM afforded me enough for 2 cases of ammo and change in my pocket. That'll be 3x now I've made the identical decision and each time the Kimber chosen has been wise decision. It's your money do as you please, and maybe it won't be a collector's item but if you want an accurate, run like a Singer sewing machine get the Kimber I've had 6 or 8 and everyone was a great gat. Better than every Colt I've had when shooting side by side.
