Tisas Duty Double Stack Upgrade / Review.

I purchased a Tisas 1911 Duty Double Stack 9MM. I carry a Staccato CS for EDC but wanted a duty size double stack. I didn't want to throw down Staccato money for a P, I’ve fitted 1911 parts on two other single stacks, so I figured I’d get a Prodigy and upgrade it. Once Tisas came out with their double stacks I figured it’d be cheaper and a good project.

In it’s stock form it was accurate and functioned without issues. The trigger weighed in at around 6 pounds which is a bit much. The extractor functioned but definitely needs some tweaking in order to get it perfect. The front and rear checkering on the grip felt good but the sides weren’t aggressive enough for my liking. The disconnector also had some serious hangup when working the slide.

Below is the list of parts / work I’ve completed.

-Holosun EPS 6 MOA
-Red Dirt DSC Trigger
-Brazos Extractor, Disconnector, Sear, Sear spring, Hammer, Hammer Strut
-Surefire X300U-B
-10 pound recoil spring / 17 main spring
-EGW MSH Prodigy, Magwell Readt
-10-8 Performance mag catch gen 1
-Springfield Prodigy grip
-RSTR Prodigy Low Pro Magwell (I have a 15% code if interested)
-10-8 Performance 1911 Spring Guide

I’m going to order a 10-8 Performance Gen 2 Slide stop. The stock one is tough to reach at times. I’d also like to go with a Wilson Combat or EGW ambi safety. I just prefer their paddles size and shape. I’ve been looking at some pistol caliber suppressors so possibly fitting a threaded barrel will be next.

After all of the fitting and swapping of parts, it's perfect. Solid accuracy and reliability. The stock sights sit in the lower third of the EPS window. The supplied magazines function fine. I also ran about 250 rounds through Prodigy and Staccato mags with no issues.

What kind of accuracy are you getting at 25 and 50 yards?
I really didn’t know that they offered a full size, optics ready. Where did you find it and how much was it? I have older STIs, and considered a Prodigy, but I had one Springer and wasn’t happy with customer service.
Thanks!

The Tisas pistols are surprisingly good quality, doubly so, when you factor the price in, too. I am using a Carry DS for USPSA, and it's been a lot of fun to shoot and fool with. All I did with mine, was swap out the 23# mainspring to a 19#, and swap the recoil spring to a 12lb.. I did swap to an EGW hammer, because I was having trouble getting the trigger where I wanted it, and I put in a Brazos pre-fit extractor (It seems like every 9mm 1911 needs an "extractor tune").
All told, I've probably got $1400 into it, including the red dot sight. Mine works well, even with Duramag 26 round magazines loaded to the gills, even with 115 ball.
Make no mistake, I still prefer a single-stack pistol, due to my hand size, but if I gotta use a double stack pistol, the Tisas are damned good pistols for a starting point. Note that I'm still in it for less than a similar Prodigy. I shoot it pretty well, too. I'm kinda thinking about going to a Duty-sized pistol, but I really like this Commander sized pistol.

Looks very good. I just bought one myself. I tried to mount a Holosun 507K but ran out of elevation adjustment. Did the EPS zero ok?

I have been getting about a 4" group at 25 yards during concentrated slow fire. Stippled the slick parts of the grip and knocked down some of the sharp edges on the frame and grip safety. I didn't realize you could just put a prodigy grip on. When I took it apart I found a good bit of gunked up cerakote. I sanded it smooth and the cycling and trigger pull improved dramatically. I have about 450 rounds through it with no malfunctions. Below is a slow fire five round group at 7 yards I shot after running some drills.

You'll have to do a little trimming to get it to fit exactly (a pair of scissors will do it fine), but this shim worked well on my Carry DS. I zero-ed it with seven (7) rounds, and still have a lot of adjustment left.

It's been close to a year since this thread started. I was wondering how things are going with that build. I'm planning on picking up a Tisas DS9 Carry to work on. I have a concern about the width of the grip. It seems to be wider than other double stacks, but that doesn't make sense if the grip frames interchange. Any thoughts on this?
